First Baptist Church, East Machias

About the Church:

Come to our "A Spiritual Road Map in a Mixed Up World" Bible Study, covering First Thessalonians

Life happens fast. Each and every day you make decisions regarding who and what will receive your time, money, and attention. At some point you have realized there is not enough of you for all the demands and, if you are like many of us, you have probably anticipated eternity more than ever during these moments. But what if life is meant to be more than simply waiting for eternity? What if it is meant to be a journey toward eternity?

In A Spiritual Road Map in a Mixed Up World, a study of 1 Thessalonians taught by Pastor Lance Witt, small group participants will work through thought-provoking questions and discussion prompting them to unpack the spiritual road map prepared for the Thessalonians and engage the group in deeper study, application, and prayer.

This curriculum has video-based teaching. Each participant will receive a personal study guide. The curriculum has two series of six sessions each.

Our Mission
To treasure Jesus Christ above all else, obeying His Word and
sharing His glory and His story with people near and far.

Our Purposes
We love God and love people by His grace through His six purposes for us:

>Worshiping our Father and Jesus our Savior;
>Praying at all times in the Spirit;
>Loving one another as Jesus has loved us;
>Teaching disciples to obey all God’s commands;
>Serving people with God’s love by doing good;
>Sharing God’s Good News about Jesus Christ.

Our Vision
We see God our Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit seeking worshipers, drawing people to Himself,
adopting them into His family, giving them His Word, enabling them to serve, and sending them to make disciples.

Letter to the Editor

[This letter was published in Downeast Coastal Press, Machias Valley News Observer, and Bangor Daily News in June, 2009]

To the Editor, June 1, 2009

Editor:
The Legislature is making severe changes to Maine’s marriage law.  One change removes this section: “The people of the State of Maine find that the union of one man and one woman joined in traditional monogamous marriage is of inestimable value to society; the State has a compelling interest to nurture and promote the unique institution of traditional monogamous marriage in the support of harmonious families and the physical and mental health of children; and that the State has the compelling interest in promoting the moral values inherent in traditional monogamous marriage.”

Those pushing for counterfeit marriage should explain why they eliminated this.  What do they object to in this statement, “marriage is of inestimable value to society”?  What is untrue in this phrase, “the State has a compelling interest to nurture and promote the unique institution”?  Why is it bad for our marriage law to support “harmonious families and the physical and mental health of children”?

Furthermore, this legislation deletes all references to monogamous marriage, such as, “the State has the compelling interest in promoting the moral values inherent in traditional monogamous marriage”. Why?

Please sign the peoples’ petition to veto these changes to Maine’s law.

Counterfeit Marriage Testimony [April 24, 2009]

This is the written testimony that Deacon Bob Simpson submitted to the Judiciary Committee Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the hearing in Augusta on the bills to recognize gay marriages or civil unions. His oral testimony was a shorter version of this text with a few minor changes. Bob thanks the Lord for the opportunity to present this testimony. He also thanks Him for the well organized hearing and the generally good behavior of those in attendance.

April 22, 2009

To the Members of the Judiciary Committee
Written testimony of Mr. Robert A. Simpson, of Whiting, Maine

During several decades working in Maine’s banking industry, I have learned the difference between genuine U.S. currency and counterfeit currency. A genuine piece of currency has been issued by the Federal Reserve under authority delegated by the U. S. Congress, based upon the authority granted in the U.S. Constitution. A counterfeit has been made by someone with no right to create legal tender. Maine banks of course will not accept counterfeits for payments or for deposit.

Even if the Maine legislature voted to authorize the printing of more currency, and called this a Federal Reserve note, it would still be a counterfeit and would not be acceptable for deposits and payments. In fact, it would be a crime to issue such counterfeits. The Maine legislature has no authority to issue Federal Reserve notes.

Marriage, the union of one man and one woman, was the first institution created by God for the benefit of mankind, long before he created the government or the church. This bill would usurp God's authority by equating the counterfeit of same sex relationships with real marriage.

Several religious leaders in Maine have said that this revised marriage law would be right and good. But Jesus Christ himself rebuked religious leaders who wanted to corrupt the marriage laws in Israel, by saying, "Haven't you read that He Who created them in the beginning made them male and female, and He also said, "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?" Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate."

Therefore, what God has created, Maine legislators must not counterfeit and destroy. We must maintain genuine man/woman marriage in Maine. I urge you to vote Ought Not to Pass on this bill.

Statement of Faith

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF EAST MACHIAS

STATEMENT OF FAITH

1. We believe that the Bible, comprised of the 66 books of the Old and New Testament, is wholly and verbally inspired of God in its original manuscripts. As such it is our inerrant, supreme, and final authority. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20,21)

2. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 3:16,17; 28:19; John 1:1)

3. We believe that God the Father is the designer of a plan which He has overseen since before creation and which He is bringing to fulfillment in Christ. His overriding goal is the glory of God. (John 17:1-5; I Corinthians 15:27,28; Ephesians 1:3-12)

4. We believe that Christ, having existed eternally, was begotten of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, that He is true God and true man, and is the only and sufficient mediator between God and man. (Matthew 1:20-23; John 1:1; Colossians 1:19; 2:9; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 4:15)

5. We believe in the person of the Holy Spirit and that his ministry is to convict the world of sin, reveal Christ to man, and to give regeneration and sanctification to the elect. (John 16:8-11; Acts 7:51; 1 Corinthians 12:3; I Thessalonians 1:4-6)

6. We believe that man was created in the image of God and thus is an eternal being. However, he sinned and thereby incurred physical and spiritual death. Among other things we understand that man is under God’s wrath because he does what his sinful nature desires and what Satan wishes him to do. In this state he can not please God; he is totally depraved. (Genesis 1:26,27; Romans 5:17-19; 8:7,8; Ephesians 2:1-3)

7. We believe in the atoning blood, substitutionary death, burial, bodily resurrection and ascension into Heaven of the Lord Jesus Christ for our sins. Presently He is reigning and interceding in Heaven on behalf of His people, the Church, and will one day return personally and visibly. We believe that salvation is received only through personal faith in Him. (John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 8:34; 10:13,17; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:22,23; 2:5,6; I Thessalonians 4:16,17)

8. We believe in the two gospel ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is an act of obedience testifying to a person’s conversion to Christ. It depicts the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, the believer’s own death to sin and the believer’s resurrection to newness of life. Baptism shall be by immersion in water, in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

The Lord’s Supper, given to believers, is the symbolic remembrance of the Lord’s death until he comes. (Matthew 3:13-17; 28:19,20; Romans 6:3,4; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

9. We believe that the local church is a body of believers in Christ who associate for worship, mutual encouragement and service, and the spread of the Gospel. This body living in righteousness shall be a light unto the world. (Matthew 5:13-16; Acts 1:8; 2:42; I Thessalonians 5:11-15; 2 Timothy 2:2)
